Why so much venom on the way to the nomination?
Author: Rosa Maria Young
During my daily ritual before I start writing for the blog, I try to inform myself about the most relevant news, reading as many papers on the net as I can, North American and European mostly. Then I advance to the blogs from both sides, though mostly from the democrats side. Lately, with the democrats race having been so close and not having yet a declared nominee, the progressive side of the party is really beginning to sound like members of a cult gone wrong. I can not believe how much venom is there. I know that politics bring in all of us a wish for finding negative things about the candidate who opposes our candidate. It is normal and even healthy to expose our differences, but when we let loose the demons and hate gets the run of the race, it is downright scary.
And of course our behavior, our vile accusations, may yet hunt us in November. I know that eventually, the candidates, for the sake of the party and if nothing else for the sake of getting a Democrat in the White House after the damaging years of Bush, will unite in campaigning against the Republicans, but what about the rabid followers of Obama? And don’t tell me that Clinton also has over zealous followers. Yes, she does, but hurt as they may be seeing their chances of a qualified woman becoming the President gone, I believe that except for a small minority they will soldier on with hope for the future. What is going to happen when Obama can not translate his winning into accomplishing all that many of his followers think he, their Messiah, was going to do for him? Change can be good, but change based on the hate of many voters, and change without clarifying that promises can not always became reality. If they have been made for the sake of winning it could become a national disappointment if not something worse. The country is profoundly divided and we have to face it. Whoever becomes President has a huge responsibility to do something about it.
