Economy not the candidates forcing change

Author: Rosa Maria Young

Change is really coming. Not the one Obama or McCain are talking about but the one the new economy is going to force on Americans. In fact in the political sense we could say it is already changing the way we perceive the candidates. During those long ago primaries the only candidate I remember warning of financial disaster was Hillary Clinton. At that time the president and his administration downplayed it. Then Hillary lost to Obama and nobody thought Obama was better than McCain in the economics side of the politics because nobody thought much about the economy. Things went wrong somehow and now Obama seems to be preferred to McCain not specially because many people think he has better plans but because the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton, did very well at times when they were economic worries in the country. When the country is in dire economic situation the voters lean towards the Democrats. And that, this year will probably affect the result of the presidential race. This is what one could call the luck effect in politics and the economy plays a large part in that luck as people put aside their ideals and beliefs when they wallets are getting empty.
And not only happens in the States. Another typical case in these days of economical incertitude is happening in England. As the Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said, “Politics, I have found, is about ups and downs, and you have got to treat adversity and periods of popularity with equal equanimity.” And he knows. These days his plan for rescuing the world from financial disaster has been lauded by many and has been an important bounce in his political life. One that a few weeks ago was almost believed to be in its last weeks. Mr Brown is now in a stronger political position than even. He has earned a second chance. But again, let us not discount change again. Once the recession starts to bite, as it surely will in both sides of the Atlantic, with unemployment rising and living standards going down, things might change again for the British Prime Minister. And were Obama to become President, it is going to be interesting how much he is still going to be able to change in the country..
