Wednesday October 29th, 2008 17:20 The hanging of Sarah Palin effigy

Yesterday I said I was not going to write anything else about the elections until we knew who had become the new president. Well, this morning reading on line a Spanish newspaper I found an article that surprised me and which I thought it could be not true. First I had not read anything about it in the American papers or blogs, second it was somewhat unbelievable that people would be so mean (I cannot print the word I really wanted!). But as in the article they were mentioning that LA Times had printed the story I went to their site and I saw the line ‘Palin effigy has law enforcement scrambling’. Hitting it one could read the whole article and see a video of it. It seems that following the Halloween spirit of decorating one’s house two men from West Hollywood had decorated theirs hanging by a noose a life size effigy of Palin. The doll eventually has sparked a national uproar, but not so apparently in the media. It has drawn the attention of the secret service, and upset politicians, as I believe it should. Nevertheless and offensive as it may be it appears not to violate any law or so have said officials of the secret service, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles City Code enforcement Division! A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said: “The sheriff made this clear. This is a country that has freedom of speech and we protect that right even when we think it’s idiotic and stupid and in bad taste.” I believe this goes further than idiotic. As a democrat I am quite angry that people think this should be taken as fun. This is pure incitement to violence. Just think the uproar among the media and followers of Obama if an effigy of him would have been hung from a noose….
In the video that was shown with the article one can see a young woman that asked what she thought about it replied more or less that Palin loves to kill things but asked what would she have done would it have been an Obama doll hanging she replied “I would have lit the house on fire”. The country has a long way to go.
I almost forgot, the house decoration also includes a mock-up of presidential candidate John McCain sitting in a chimney surrounded by paper flames.
Some hours later: I have read about this in in a British paper and a French one. Our image abroad is sure going to improve
