Wednesday November 26th, 2008 13:00 Finally an answer: Martine Aubry wins

The French Socialist party is finally if not satisfied at least relieved. After four days of total confusion, they managed to choose a leader. The decision has not been easy, as I already wrote a couple of days ago, but the votes have spoken. Martine Aubry, the straight-talking and traditionalist mayor of Lille won. The first thing she said in her acceptance speech was “I want to say to Ségolène that together we are going to win for the French.” Right after this she went to kiss her. This apparent entente coming after the embarrassing power struggle among the followers of both women is to be taken with caution. But François Hollande, the exiting leader of the party who was the former partner and father of Ségolène’ s four children and had refused to support her calls for a second vote, told the assembled members, “”The party has a very pressing need to find itself again.” Nobody is contesting that.
