President-elect Obama has a full plate. That nobody can doubt. In a few weeks the inauguration will take place and all the good and bad news will be his responsibility. Personally, I hope he follows what he promised during the campaign about making health insurance one of the priorities of his administration. I am even hoping he goes a little further than his promises and helps create universal health care.
These days we hear constantly about the precarious state of the economy and the jobs losses that are a consequence of it. There is not much talk about health insurance and yet it certainly has not improved. I dread to think how many persons are now uninsured in the country, how many children are sick and untreated, how many deaths occur for lack of care. But if the numbers of uninsured were large, now they are increasing as a consequence in many cases of job losses and the unique American way of losing health insurance when one is let go from his/her job. It is not difficult to see that in the USA every job lost adds at least 1 more person to the uninsured in most cases. And yet, nobody seems to talk much about it and the idea of universal care is alien to many people who think it is a socialist thing. That should be changed if only we care about our children and our elder and poorer people. Let us hope Obama does not forget about it.
