Saturday March 14th, 2009 18:43 Obama changes his tone

After weeks of warning Americans about the dreadful economic situation the country was in -which was and is true- in order to pressure Congress to act on his proposals, President Obama has lately tried to adjust the tone to a more confident one by way of praising the American workers. He did so saying they were “the most productive workers on earth” and at the same time trying to reassure the country by adding that America has “some of the most innovative businesses on earth.” This is all very well but in my opinion rather condescending, as if people needed to be told by him how they were. Plus those utterances are not new and I can remember hearing the same from all politicians for years and years. If it was and is so, how come we are in such a dire situation?
Maybe some people need reassuring the same others need to be told what to do. Who is the one who is going to run to buy stocks after President Obama encouraged people to buy them because they were becoming “a potentially good deal” for those willing to think long term? And bear in mind that he uttered such an opinion even before the last four days when the stock market seemed to bounce a little. And who could even afford to buy shares? The unemployed, the person who lost his/her house to foreclosure? The one who could not afford to pay for health insurance? And this is coming from a democrat administration. What would have happened if the republicans would still be in power?
No, I am not going to say there is not hope, but is going to come with sacrifices until we reach the good days. For some- many of whom are part of those productive workers- more than for others.
