Following what I wrote in ‘Spanish courts accuse former US officials of torture’,
I have read some late news about the investigation being stopped that have made me wonder if this was caused by pressure from the US. I don’t want to believe it in two counts: American administrations are generally not humble enough to acknowledge that other country might bring to justice American officials, so the Obama administration even if those accused were members of the prior administration is not going to allow it; also Spain is a democratic country assertive enough to face the displeasure of the US if it believes in something as serious as torture. No, my belief is that it was a Spanish internal political matter. The Spanish top law-enforcement official, Candido Conde-Pumpido, ruled against the investigation into whether six Bush administration officials sanctioned torture against terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, in what has been perceived as a political act against the socialist government of Zapatero. This of course leaves Obama off the hook but it might not be final. We will continue monitoring this.
