Iceland chooses a woman

In this global financial crisis we are going through, one of the most affected countries was Iceland, to the point of being brought to its knees. The Icelanders, and specially its women, after blaming the men for the crisis, looked for a female solution to clean up the mess choosing caretaker Primer Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir from the Social Democrats to lead the country until the elections. This Sunday the final results have shown that the leftist coalition won, a blow for the pro-business Independence Party that many blamed for the collapse of the country’s banking system. The left-wing coalition of the Social Democrats and the Left-Green party is led by Ms Sigurdardottir who becomes the first openly gay world leader It is believed that she is likely to apply for Iceland to join the European Union within the next two months and have the country adopt the single currency as she strives to use her new mandate to rebuild the nation’s battered economy and ensure such a collapse as it occurred is never repeated. Nevertheless, the European issue is a deeply divisive one. Some are worried that EU membership would affect the way of life of a small island of just over 300,000 people and drown it with regulations from Brussels.
