Ahmadinejad’s re-election

Author: Rosa Maria Young

According to what we read, the unrest continues in Iran after the results of the elections last Friday gave a markedly victory to the incumbent President Ahmadinejad. While the Iranians were going to the urns, in Washington President Obama said the “robust debate” during the campaign suggested a possibility of change in Iran. There has been no comment from Washington since Ahmadinejad was declared the winner. It appears that US officials have wisely adopted a wait-and-see attitude without either congratulating or directly criticizing Ahmadinejad’s landslide victory. In the meantime Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, decided not to use his limitless powers to intervene in the disputes that Friday’s election started. He went on state TV and calling the result a “divine assessment,” urged the nation to unite behind Ahmadinejad.
Now, while most of the world has adopted a cautionary position about the Iranian elections, senior Israeli leaders appealed to the international community to rally against Tehran following Ahmadinejad’s re-election, after describing his landslide victory in Iran’s presidential polls as a “slap in the face of moderate forces.”,
