Who will become President of the EU?

Author: Rosa Maria Young

In early October, if the Lisbon Treaty is endorsed by Ireland in a referendum, the European Union will create the new post of President of the Union. With that in mind several candidates are already being seen as possible presidents. The one attracting more interest is Tony Blair, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom who has the full backing of the British government. The new post will mean an appointment of a minimum of 30 months and a maximum of five years. While it is believed that Blair wants the post, he may not secure it unless he campaigns actively, something that he seems reluctant to do unless he is sure of getting the job. Also, not all European head of states are behind Blair. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, may support Wolfgang Schussel, the former Austrian chancellor, even though France seems to be against him. Another contender who stands also a chance is Felipe Gonzalez, who was Spain prime minister for 13 years and is backed by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
