Who is in charge in the Obama administration?
Author: Rosa Maria YoungWho is running foreign policy in the Obama administration? It seems Vice President Joseph R. Biden during his recent trip to Georgia and Ukraine pledged support for both countries efforts to break away from the Russia’s orbit and join the NATO alliance. This is probably not going to happen any time soon as according to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, NATO seems to realize that those two countries should not be pulled into the alliance. In any case, it seems nobody made much of Biden’s comments back in the US and that probably emboldened him to make other sort of comments about Russia in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. He made harsh references to Russia’s failing economy (hope he remembers that the US ’s economy is not doing that well!), loss of face and a leadership that is “clinging to something in the past.” To these comments he added that the Obama administration “would make no deals and accept no compromises with the Kremlin in exchange for better relations.” So, in an expected answer to all this Russia demanded a clarification of the administration’s intentions as they added they were receiving a mixed message just after Obama had visited Moscow. The Obama administration while not backing away from Biden’s remarks attempted to smooth things over and had Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, saying “The president and vice president believe Russia will work with us not out of weakness but out of national interest.” Where is Hillary Clinton in all this? I am curious if we are going to know her thoughts. After all she is the Secretary of State .
