Are we more clear about health reform today?

Author: Rosa Maria Young

No, I did not watch President Obama’s speech last night. It was 2 am where I live! But today I have read lots of articles about it in American and European papers plus lots of blogs. Quite interesting as while in the blogs one can see which side the writer is from, in the papers there is not great criticism of the president. Which does not mean everybody though he was great or 100 percent right. After weeks and weeks of almost inaction, Obama went into attack mood which he needed to do not only for his health care reform but also for his presidency. The problem is that while he was more forceful that he has been for a while and talked more of his plan than before, I am not sure he has convinced many of his listeners. I found his speech again like a list of things to do, or needed to do but not much explanation of how. He tried to be bipartisan, or to change some of the opposition minds, making an overture to Republicans by pledging to tackle medical-malpractice lawsuits. For the progressive of his own party the speech was not perhaps all they have wanted as the so much talked about public option was definitely not a sure thing.
By the end of the speech I imagine many of those who saw or read the speech came out with many unanswered questions: did he explain what ‘his plan’ really was? How generous those subsidies he promised should be and who would be eligible for them? Are we going to have a public option or not? Is he going to take charge of the process or will he continue to leave the decisions in the hands of the Congress? All this things need answers.
