Friday September 11th, 2009 18:25 9/11 – May they rest in peace

Today as bells tolled throughout New York City and mourners observed the moment in silence, people honored the nearly 3,000 nationals of over 90 countries who died in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. People of all walks of life, from the president of the United states on remembered the dead. One of the most moving pictures I saw was not of a politician but of small Indian schoolchildren holding a vigil to remember the victims. May these rest in peace and their families and friends find the serenity to continue their lives.
When as a response to the attacks the US launched the “War on Terrorism” invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban who had provided quarters to Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda group., the world saw it as a just way to combat terrorism. But the compass was lost when we invaded Iraq. Now we don’t know whether bin Laden is dead or alive and if so where he is. What we know is that the Taliban is regaining control of Afghanistan and most probably al-Qaeda is destabilizing Pakistan -a country with nuclear capabilities- and we are intent in stopping the Taliban in Afghanistan, thus creating more victims among our young people and the ones from our allies, than the terrorist managed in September 11, 2001.
