Monday September 28th, 2009 18:33 Angela Merkel remains chancellor

If only elections were in the US like in Germany: relatively short, fast with the results and then…back to work. Well Germany is Germany and last night its citizens already knew the result of the elections: Chancellor Angela Merkel had won. So in part it was more of the same as ‘Angieā€ as the Germans call her will remain their chancellor. But the result of the elections changed the party she could form a government with. Mrs Merkel new government will be made up by her Christian Democrats and the pro-business Free Democrats. In part for the not so good results of Chancellor Merkel’s party -the CDU- the FDP (free democrats) was strengthen while the SPD (Social Democratic Party) suffered a large defeat. Now Mrs Merkel will be able to push ahead on issues like tax relief and extend the life of Germany’s 17 nuclear plants.
As a sign of social change in what once was a traditional Germany, Mrs Merkel who is the country’s first female chancellor will be join by the first openly gay vice chancellor and foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, from the FDP. This also makes a big difference with politics in the US!
