Today, in his weekly radio and Internet address President Obama announced a series of what he called “common-sense steps to save for retirement.” There is something here which does not have much common-sense, specially if you are one of those jobless persons. The coming Labor Day is not going to be a very happy one for many workers in the US. The figures of unemployment, just revealed, are still quite bleak. Never mind that some politicians tell us that the stimulus worked and we are out of recession, the truth is that according to the figures reported by the Labor Department this Friday the unemployment rate continued rising to 9.7 percent from 9.4 percent. As a proof that life does not stand still, When I wrote the article yesterday, it was Germany and France agreeing to reduce the bonuses paid to bankers and planning to impose control on this in the coming Pittsburgh summit of the G20. On September 24 until the 26, the G20 summit will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 of the world’s largest national economies plus the European Union will gather to discuss the financial state and try to get agreement on proposals aiming to avoid a repeat of the financial crisis.
