Saving our planet or politics?

Author: Rosa Maria Young

Having contributed with China to destroy any possibility of reaching a positive deal in Copenhagen that could help our planet, President Obama went back to the US after calling the weak and not binding accord produced “a meaningful breakthrough.” Xie Zhenhua, head of the Chinese delegation, said, “I think we can call Copenhagen a success.” Both the US and China were right if they were just thinking about their countries. But of course, we cannot just blame those two nations- even though many countries have been discreet about blaming the US and China has been named the main culprit in the Copenhagen disaster. Part of the blame should also go to the EU and other influential nations that could have pushed a deal ignoring China but they did not. In fact, from the beginning of the summit, the world should have seen that it was wrong to believe that the two biggest polluters -China and the US- would let themselves be tied into a binding agreement that could monitor their emissions. And at the end, it was totally unimportant that the EU went to offer 20 or 30 percent reductions. What decided the outcome in Copenhagen was the deal made by President Obama and the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in their private meeting. After that deal, it was very clear that the Europeans had no influence whatsoever in the results. A lesson to learn?
