Haiti suffers again
Author: Rosa Maria YoungOne of the worst earthquakes to hit the Caribbean region struck Haiti Tuesday afternoon. With a magnitude estimated at 7.0, it leveled shantytown dwellings as well as causing the collapse of the National Palace. It seems nobody was spared. What we felt when we heard the news must be nothing compared with the suffering that the earthquake has brought to a nation that was already the poorest of that hemisphere. When many governments heard about the news, the response was positive. President Obama said that the country was ready to assist the people of Haiti. The US State Department has been coordinating an assessment of the situation and any possible assistance. From France, another country with important ties to Haiti, which used to be a French colony, two planes were to depart today loaded with humanitarian help and specialized rescue people. Britain, Spain and many other countries have pledged aid. If all this help materializes soon to help Haiti, some of the immense tragedy the country is going through could be lessen.
