There is a question frequently asked by Europeans and to which is difficult to answer: How come in the United States you have a hard time electing a woman for president? Even Latin American countries with their strongly oriented male culture have managed to elect women as presidents, just think Nicaragua, Panama, Chile and Argentina. And today we have to add Costa Rica to the list. The 50- year-old Laura Chinchilla who had been a vice president in the administration of the current president Oscar Arias, became the first female president of the country after campaigning to continue free market policies in the most stable country in Central America.
Almost at the same time, another woman in Europe, Yulia Tymoshenko, the prime minister of Ukraine, lost her bid to become president of her country. After a very slender lead, her rival the Russian-leaning opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych, is on course to become the country’s president.
