According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, five NATO countries, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway and the Netherlands, are planning to ask for the US to withdraw the nuclear arms from Europe. In a joint statement, four former Belgian government ministers said that NATO’s nuclear arms no longer serve a military purpose. The United States which began deploying nuclear arms in Europe to deter the Soviet Union from attacking Europe still maintains nuclear bombs at air bases in several European nations even though after the demise of communism one could question their need. Even Russia is now a strategic partner of NATO. The removal of the bombs from European soil would send a positive message about the seriousness of Obama’s intention of leading the way to reduce the world nuclear threat. If as it has been said the five European countries go on with their demand that Washington takes back the weapons, it would indicate an European commitment to a world without nuclear arms.
