The murder of a top Hamas official in Dubai, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, could be a fantastic plot for a bestseller. Unfortunately, never mind what we think about Hamas, it was nevertheless the killing of a human being in cold blood. And not only that but the assassins tried to use deception and in a way put the blame in several countries, which had nothing to do with the act, by using passports of Britain, Ireland, Germany and France. It is not totally clear if the passports were forged or if they were stolen. Also and while the Dubai police have said they are “99 percent certain” that the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service, is responsible for the assassination, the EU is refraining from making explicit criticism of Israel, even though it is widely assume to be behind the operation. The Israeli government is sticking to its policy of ambiguity in intelligence matters, neither confirming nor denying its role.
At the moment, the European Union has used a declaration condemning the use of forged passports from the bloc’s member countries. Miguel Angel Moratinos, the Spanish foreign minister has said: “We are extremely concerned that European passports, which are a very rigorous and legal document, can be used in a different manner for a different purpose.”
