Now that we were a little more at ease with the future of the euro, it became time to think back again about the future of the United Kingdom which in some ways it can also affect Europe. It is Tuesday afternoon and still no clear indication of what is or can happen with the three British parties talks. The latest is some unconfirmed report in the Evening Standard suggesting that Gordon Brown might stand down as Prime Minister as early as this evening. The possibility of a coalition of the Liberal Democrats with Labour seems also to be finished. This will not only be a disappointment for the Labour party but also for those who expected a deal between Labour and Liberals, specially the voters who are pro-Europe as it is well known that the Tories have negative feelings about the UK association with the EU. This has become even more clear after a leak about a letter written last week by the Conservative shadow leader, William Hague, and addressed to David Cameron. The letter apparently says the UK wants to undo its previous commitments on EU criminal justice, social and employment legislation and states “We will never join the euro.” While the Conservative party has said it knew nothing about the letter, it could clearly complicate their attempt to create a coalition with the pro-EU liberal. Stay tuned…
