President Obama has again disappointed many who believed in his promises. This time it was his election pledge to close Guantanamo. Any doubt about his abandoning his once ironclad promise of closing the prison looks distant, if it ever happens at all during his watch, specially since last night he gave the green light for military trials to resume there and even established rules to hold some of the detainees indefinitely. While Cuba celebrates today its National Rebellion Day, the question people are asking themselves more and more is if the country is changing. After the pressure of the Catholic Church and the appeals of Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, Cuban president Raul Castro has agreed to release 52 political prisoners, of the so-called Group of 75, who were imprisoned since 2003 for “counter-revolutionary activities.” Read the rest of this entry »
