What prompted Sarkozy to suddenly recognize the Libyan rebels in Benhazi? Was he trying to give the impression that he was the European leader who had a grasp on the events? If that is what he intended he probably failed as at this moment nobody seems to know which way things are going to go. President Obama has again disappointed many who believed in his promises. This time it was his election pledge to close Guantanamo. Any doubt about his abandoning his once ironclad promise of closing the prison looks distant, if it ever happens at all during his watch, specially since last night he gave the green light for military trials to resume there and even established rules to hold some of the detainees indefinitely. From one day to the next the West changes its attitude towards the Libyan crisis. Ominously, some leaders have been beating the drums of war.
